Anthropogenic pressures on the Earth System have reached a scale where a urgent change of route is inescapable.

Despite the actual environmental, economic and social crisis calls humanity for radical changes to ensure the survival of the mankind, there are new prospects that encourage “designers” to rethink the entire socio-productive system in a sustainable manner.

However, despite the “eco-friendly” products and services, use far less energy and materials than those of some decades ago, the overall consumption of environmental resources continues to increase.

This tells us clearly that even if the existent improvements are increasing, they are not enough: the translation towards sustainability requires a systemic change. It is not a question of doing what we already do better, but of doing different things in innovative and different ways going beyond the mere eco-efficiency.

We need to regain the cultural knowledge and experience that allows us to define and design production flows that can traverse different systems in a continuous process that decreases the ecological footprint of products while increasing income throughout the economy. The function of designers consists in trying to re-balance the relation between production, environment and society and in making an effort to start some interventions which maintain the balance of this mutual bond, making it better through a constant multi-disciplinary dialogue.

A crisis is usually a dramatic event, but, at the same time, it is also an extraordinary opportunity to reorganize ourselves and to start again with new enthusiasm and, where it is necessary, radical cuts.

L’Indice di sviluppo umano (in inglese: HDI-Human Development Index) è un indicatore di sviluppo macroeconomico realizzato dall’economista pakistano Mahbub ul Haq nel 1990. Il primo ministro cinese Wen Jabao ha annunciato che il piano economico 2011-2015 prevederà una crescita “solo” del 7% invece che dell’ 8%.

Questo vuol dire che grazie alla riduzione dell” 1% del PIL cinese (che si traduce in circa 30 miliardi di $) si potrà ridurre la pressione delle attività umane sull’ambiente ( l’ 1% di emissioni in meno ogni anno potrebbe alleggerire l’atmosfera di qualcosa come 500 milioni di t di CO2).

Questo può segnare un punto di svolta dsal momento che per la prima volta una delle potenze mondiali che negli ultimi anni sta vivendo un boom di crescita impressionante ha messo in discussione il concetto stesso di crescita economica illimitata

Lo stesso presidente Cinese afferma che:

«Non possiamo assolutamente sacrificare l’ambiente per pagare il prezzo di uno sviluppo ad alta velocità, per avere uno sviluppo cieco e così creare una sovracapacità e generare un’ulteriore pressione sull’ambiente e sulle risorse. Questo sviluppo economico è insostenibile.»
